At the bitter end of the Holocaust, Moniek Frajbaum/Morris Friebaum was anything but “liberated.”

Barely 18 years old, he was emaciated with rotting teeth and a leg wound that would dog him the rest of his life. On May 2, 1945, Moniek/Morris had no family, no home, not a single earthly possession, and nothing but a sixth-grade education. Decades later, his second child would instinctively appoint herself his lifelong champion and defender.

This is a story of one man’s remarkable resilience and the bonds of mutual protection and love that shaped his daughter’s life.
