In this moving account, author Tracy Slater illuminates the experience of Karl Yoneda, a U.S. citizen of Japanese descent, and his wife, Elaine Buchman, a Jewish American whom he had met in San Francisco’s activist circles. Karl, hoping to provide for his family and postpone his own confinement, signed on to help build the camps. Elaine faced an excruciating choice when the government came for her son Tommy: she entered Manzanar with him, leaving behind her daughter from a previous marriage. Drawing on Elaine’s own journals and other primary sources, Slater brings this extraordinary story to life, shedding light on resilience, sacrifice, and the moral complexities of a dark chapter in American history.
