If it hadn’t been for David Israel,

As a child, Lola Atlansky was hidden by a family in Poland, placed in a convent, and rescued by David Israel, a Danish Jew who saved many children. At age six, she was adopted by David’s sister. Years later, while studying in England, she reunited with relatives through a notice in The Jewish Daily Forward. Lola eventually settled in New York, where she met her husband, Bert. They’ve been married sixty years and have two children and four grandchildren.
